Junior roundup: Cyclones edge Warriors in overtime

Steven Grant scored 4:12 into overtime to give the Listowel Cyclones a 3-2 win over the Stratford Warriors Sunday afternoon at the Steve Kerr Memorial Complex.

Rylan Bowers opened the scoring for the Cyclones in the second period and assisted on Brenden Clayton’s goal to tie the game 2-2 with less than seven minutes remaining in the third.

Stratford (2-1-0-1) trailed 1-0 entering the final frame before Evan Dowd (shorthanded) and Blake Wideman scored 98 seconds apart to give the Warriors the lead. Dowd, who scored twice in Friday’s win over Brantford, assisted on Wideman’s goal.

Dixon Grimes made 29 saves for Listowel, while Rhett Kimmell stopped 25 shots in the Warriors net.

Listowel was 0-for-3 on the power play, and Stratford went 0-for-2.


Tavistock kicked off its 50th anniversary season Saturday on home ice with a 3-2 overtime win over Wellesley in a rematch of last year’s Doherty Division final, which the Applejacks won.

Thomas Haffner scored the winner 2:49 into the extra frame. Tanner Johnson and Mitch McKay also scored for the Braves (1-0). Jensen Van Boekel made 35 saves.

Zachary Lyons scored both of Wellesley’s goals. Kailem Chappelle stopped 33 shots.

Wellesley went 1-for-3 with the man advantage, and Tavistock was 0-for-5.


The Mitchell Hawks opened their season with a pair of wins.

After a 5-1 road win Friday in Walkerton, the Hawks opened their home schedule Sunday with a 5-4 victory over Hanover.

Brett Denny scored 1:54 into overtime against the Barons. Denny, Tanner Hertel and Carter Lewis each had a goal and assist. Jarett Bogdon and Ethan Hill added single markers. Mitchell goalie Ryan Govier made 29 saves.

Luke Hoelscher scored twice for Hanover. Zack Cameron had a goal and two assists, and Ryan Marriage also scored. Brendon Landry made 37 saves.

Hanover went 3-for-9 on the power play, and Mitchell was 0-for-7.
