Long-time Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek, who is battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer, became emotional after a contestant’s heartfelt message on Monday’s broadcast.

Dhruv Gaur entered Final Jeopardy! with $2,000 to wager on his answer during the show’s Tournament of Champions semifinal.

“You’re smiling,” Trebek said to Gaur. “I like that. Let’s take a look at your response. Did you come up with the right one? No.”

Gaur didn’t know the answer, but his message to the Canadian host brought him to tears.

“What is we love you Alex!”

And Trebek, who normally shows very little emotion on the show, began to choke up.

“That’s very kind of you, thank you.”

Trebek then paused, and his voice continued to break as he tried to keep his emotions in check.

“Cost you $1,995. You’re left with five bucks, OK.”

Gaur explained his Final Jeopardy! answer in a series of tweets following the broadcast.

“For context, Alex had just shared with us that he was reentering treatment for pancreatic cancer. We were all hurting for him so badly.

“When Final Jeopardy came up, I could’ve tried to puzzle it together, but really, just kept thinking about Alex, and thought he should know.

“I’m just very grateful I got the opportunity to say what I know everyone was thinking. Sending all the love. #weloveyoualex”

Trebek announced he had pancreatic cancer in March and has been through two rounds of treatment. He has hosted the show since 1984.
